- ―Official description
RWBY: Heroes vs. Villains, often abbreviated as RWBY: HvV and sometimes referred to simply as Heroes vs. Villains, is an action turn-based strategy mobile game based on the American anime web-series RWBY, and is developed jointly by Morningwood Software and Rooster Teeth Games, and published by Morningwood Arts. Semblance 7 was used in developing the game. The PC version was developed by Morningwood New York.
While some of the gameplay mechanics are similar to NHN Entertainment's RWBY: Amity Arena, such as collecting cards to unlock characters and choosing a group of characters to fight with, the majority of the gameplay is different.
Gameplay
In RWBY: Heroes vs. Villains, the gameplay mechanics are similar in nature to Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and Marvel Strike Force. During combat, each Character is given a Turn, which is based on their Turn Meter that regenerates overtime whenever other characters—allies and enemies—take their turns. During a Character's turn, the player may select an enemy and use an ability that attacks them, however there are certain abilities where the player may need to select an ally; these are usually for Assists or granting an effect.
As mentioned above, every Character has a Turn Meter, which has a maximum of 100% and cannot exceed this threshold. Turn Meter can also be manipulated through other methods as well; these include the Status Effects Speed Up and Speed Down where the former increases the rate that Turn Meter regenerates while the latter decreases the rate, and any Ability—certain Basics, Specials and Partners—may also grant a Character Turn Meter or remove an amount; these also includes Special Traits and Leader Traits. Once a Character takes their Turn and after using an ability, excluding Out of Turn (Assists and Counters) attacks, their Turn Meter is reset to 0, though depending on the effect of that Character's used Ability, they may also gain Turn Meter. An example being the Atlas Soldier - Squad Leader's Basic Ability which grants him 25% Turn Meter and an additional 15% if his target was below 100% Health.

Game Modes
Campaign
Campaign is a core Game Mode available in the game. This Campaign mode includes two separate storylines: the first following the canon story from Volumes 1 to 4 while the second follows an original story focusing on Team JNPR. Each Campaign of the canon Storyline will reward Character Cards of a specific Character.
While in Campaign mode, players will not be able to use their own Roster but instead will be given a team of Characters.
Battle Arena
Battle Arena is a core Game Mode available in the game. The Battle Arena includes two types of Arenas: Heroes and Villains. In Heroes Arena, only Heroes characters can be used and only Villains characters for Villains Arenas. They are then separated into Battle Arena Sets with nine Battles each. These Battles consists of four Encounters with the last Encounter always containing a Boss enemy supported by Elite enemies.
In each of these four Encounters, there will be up to 6 enemies present: these enemies will always be unnamed NPCs with Characters from the game's Roster sometimes appearing as Elite or Boss enemies. As players progress through the Battle Arena Sets, enemies will become more powerful and challenging. Starting at Battle Arena Set 4, every Battle will contain an Elite enemy in Encounter 3; some Elite enemies have an Elite-specific Special Ability or Special Trait. Starting at Battle Arena Set 7, Battles will begin to feature more Elite enemies in their first, second and third Encounters with at least two Bosses in their last Encounters. Starting at Battle Arena Set 12, every Encounter in a Battle now contains a Boss supported by five Elite enemies.
After the completion of a Battle Arena Set, players will unlock a Huntsmen variant of that Set. In these Huntsmen Battles, players can obtain better Player XP, Lien rewards as well as chances to earn Schnee Dust Crystals and Character Cards of a Character attached to a Battle. However, each Huntsmen Battle can only be played a maximum of five times daily.
In each Battle Arena Set, all enemies will have a set Level, Grade Tier, Veterancy Tier and Star rating. Below is a chart displaying each Set's enemy stats and their Player Level requirement.
Academy Field Trip
Field Trips are raids that Academies can launch to fight against powerful enemies with the full strength of their Academy, requiring team work. In these Field Trips, there are four Phases with the first three containing a Boss and the fourth containing the Raid Boss itself. In order for Academies to progress through each Phase, the Boss needs to be defeated and the next phase begins. Each Field Trip has several Difficulty options to choose from; Huntsmen is the highest difficulty available and is recommended for Academies with Academy Power of 40 million or higher. All Field Trips have a duration of three days to be completed.
When a Field Trip is completed on Heroic or Huntsmen difficulty, the Academies' participating students will receive identical rewards, such as Character Cards. If a Field Trip has not been completed by the time the duration ends, no rewards will be given to Academies.
There are two Field Trips available at the launch of RWBY: Heroes vs. Villains.
- The Initiation - rewards Glynda Goodwitch Character Cards
- The Atlesian Paladin - rewards James Ironwood Character Cards
