―Official description

Eclipse Universe: Rose Squad - Extinction, often referred to simply as Rose Squad: Extinction, is an action FPS video game developed by Nakamura Interactive and Frost Games, and published by Morningwood Arts for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5 and on Microsoft Windows via Steam, and will become available for the Semblance console when it is released. It was developed using Semblance 7, the newest version of the Semblance engine. It is marketed as a reboot of the Rose Squad Trilogy that spun-off from the Call of Duty: Eclipse Warfare series and retcons a major key event in Call of Duty: Retribution. It is the first in the Rose Squad Sequel Trilogy. The game had an Open Beta in January 2022 and a Skirmish Beta in February 2022. Players who preordered any game edition had early access to these betas at midnight Tuesday while the betas became available for everyone else at 1PM Tuesday.

Set in Jesse Loon's original universe, Rose Squad: Extinction focuses on the TITAN-X fireteam Rose Squad, a special forces unit of highly-trained super-soldiers within the Eclipse Military's Special Operations Task Force, and is set just months after Call of Duty: Retribution, Extinction follows Rose Squad as they undertake various missions given by High General Richard Lawson alongside forces of the 3rd Special Operations Division against the Korman Military as the Second Korman Conflict continues to rage on across the Milky Way galaxy. Unlike the original Trilogy, Extinction is not an adaption of the Rose Squad Trilogy novels but rather continues the story in it's own way.

Console Features

These are the game's features available on consoles. A 4K or 8K TV are required for 4K and 8K resolution settings. For native 4K at 75Hz, a 4K TV that supports 75Hz is required, and vice versa for 8K TVs.

  • 4K resolution at 75Hz
  • Ray-tracing
  • HDR
  • Cloud saving
  • Crossplay and cross-progression

Crossplay can be disabled in the settings, but is highly recommended to remain enabled. To enable Cross-progression, players will need to create an Eclipse Universe ID, which is an account that users can sign up for on the Nakamura Interactive. From here, they can link their platform accounts into a single account that can be used across the game's available platforms, allowing cross-progression. The process is akin to Epic Games' cross-progression system.

Gameplay

Rose Squad: Extinction features gameplay elements from that of tactical shooters. The heads-up display (HUD) will show critical information for the player to see, such as their health, minimap, currently equipped weapon, its ammo count, their grenades, and the status of their AI Squadmates, and a compass at the top of the HUD for objectives and directions.

Difficulty

The game features five Difficulties that'll affect both the player and enemies as well as enemy encounters throughout the Singleplayer Campaign. These difficulties include:

  • Recruit - For newer players to the FPS genre or want to experience the story.
  • Normal - For players familiar with FPS.
  • Hardcore - For those seeking a challenge.
  • Legendary - For players wanting to step up and tackle space warfare.

High-Value Tier Enemy

High-Value Tier enemies are mini-Bosses encountered throughout the Singleplayer Campaign. These enemies are more stronger and powerful than the standard infantry players will fight. High-Value enemies are smarter, will generally outwit players and form strategies with AI.

Regardless of Difficulty selection, High-Value Tier enemies will spawn to support Bosses at certain encounters, and will always be named, unlike standard High-Value Tiers.

Officer 600 (450) KXR-20 Blaster 100
Officers are high-ranked Korma Military infantry with experience on the battlefield. They lead squads of troops in battle and command respect. They are more armoured and armed than rank-and-file enemies.

General 1200 (900) KXR-50 Blaster 200
Generals are the most senior officers of the Korma Military. They command whole armies and fleets with much respect from the Korman Elders Council. Troops under their command have higher morale and will blindly follow orders.

These enemies are affected by the current Difficulty's Enemy Health and Damage Multipliers, decreasing or increasing their health, armour and damage output.

TITAN-X Battle Suit

The TITAN-X Battle Suit is a core gameplay system of Rose Squad: Extinction. With it, players will be able to upgrade their Battle Suit using Modules and Suit Upgrades. Modules are obtained by completing Missions on higher difficulties and Campaign Challenges while Suit Upgrades are purchasable from The Armoury using Armoury Credits. Modules add additional abilities and traits to the Battle Suit. Suit Upgrades includes effects such as increased reload speeds and mantling speeds.

Military Experience is a standard ranking system, going from 1 to 100 and featuring traditional military ranks as titles. When ranking up in Military Experience, players will gain Armoury Credits that they can use in the Armoury to purchase Suit Upgrades for their Battle Suit.

Fireteam Command

Fireteam Command is a core gameplay system of Rose Squad: Extinction where the player is able to command their Fireteam's AI Squadmates. Throughout the Singleplayer Campaign, players will be able to command their Fireteam squadmates, to issue orders to them which include ordering them to a position, group up for a team attack, enter a stealth stance to reduce noise, perform search and destroy in the current area for enemies, form up and move as a group and to revive a fallen squadmate or yourself. When the player's health and shields are both depleted, they will enter a Downed state and remain on the ground, while in this state, they cannot move or fire their weapons, and can either order their Squadmates to revive the player, clear the area for enemies or complete their objective, but are on a time limit before the player dies and the mission fails, reverting back to a checkpoint. Players will come across various objects within the environment that'll glow with an outline and will be highlighted once the crosshair is on that object. The AI Squadmates can be ordered to these objects depending on their type: Sealed Doors will allow for a synchronized team breach-and-clear, Crates or any 3 feet tall objects can be used as cover or a sniper vantage point, Military Barricades to make use of anti-armour and heavy ordnance weapons, Objectives that can be destroyed with an explosive or heavy ordnance weapons, and Vehicles that Fireteam members can make use of.

Each Fireteam Squadmate has their own Specialization unique to them. Laura von Schnee's Specialization is Technaholic which allows her to be ideal when handling any electronics such as computer or command consoles, enemy technology such as turrets, robots or androids and primarily vehicles heavily relying on electronic systems, and can temporarily enhance the player's TITAN-X Battle Armour. Brenda Vallée's Specialization is Sharpshooter where she is most useful as a sniper and long-range firefights, can score Critical Hits on enemies and can enhance any Sniper and Marksman class weapon held by the player. Tao Lan's Specialization is Ordnance where she is most useful for demolition orders such as destroying large barricades, barriers, destructible walls and objectives, and she can provide the player with specialized explosives and modified heavy weapons as well as enhance the player's currently held Heavy Weapon.

Player Progression

Player Progression in Rose Squad: Extinction is unified in both Multiplayer and Cooperative, sharing progress towards challenges, player and weapon leveling.

Every player will have an associated Military Rank with their accounts. This rank can be increased by earning XP, which is obtained from completing challenges and matches, and getting kills in both PvP and PvE modes. Challenges usually grant the most efficient progress towards a player's Military Rank. At Military Rank 5, players will unlock Daily Challenges and Weekly Challenges, the former are easier to complete and is less time consuming than the latter, though the latter grants more XP and requires more time. These Daily and Weekly Challenges can be viewed in The Armoury. Daily Reset is 1PM and Weekly Reset is 1PM every Monday.

Specialized Weapon Variants

Specialized Weapon Variants are a class of specialized weapons featured in Rose Squad: Extinction, which come in four Rarities: Rare, Epic, Legendary and Ancient. SWVs come with Weapon Perks that make them unique from regular weapons, and in addition to having access to regular attachments, they also have access to SWV Attachments, special attachments only found on SWVs. Weapon Perks feature their own upgrades called Masterworks, which improves the efficiency of the Perk's effects.

Specialized Weapon Variants tailored towards PvE specifically will be unavailable for use in Multiplayer for balancing.

Singleplayer

Multiplayer

Frost Games developed Rose Squad: Extinction's Multiplayer mode. The Multiplayer is similar to that of Call of Duty and Halo. Consisting of both arena and large PvP combat, the Multiplayer offers a mix of both close quarter combat and large-scale battles, featuring up to 128 players in PvP battles.

Canonically, the Multiplayer takes place in both the Training Simulations and during the Second Korman Conflict. Players take the roles of Eclipse Army Ranger Regiment Assault Troopers, a specialized force of infantry part of the Eclipse Army and founded by TITAN-X Riley Rose. Additionally, post-launch content updates would introduce a narrative to the mode, similar to live-service games.

Classes

In the game's Multiplayer, players can make use of several Classes that each have their own playstyle, equipment and weapons, and have three Class Abilities and a single Passive Trait. These Classes feature their own skill trees that'll allow players to upgrade them, adding their own layer of progression.

  • Assault Troopers excel in all-out assault tactics, to break enemy defenses and take control of vital choke points, allowing allies to move forward more swiftly.
  • Heavy Troopers excel in stalwart tactics, to defend their allies and take enemy fire as well as attracting enemy attention to themselves.
  • Support Troopers excel in supportive tactics to keep their allies well-equipped to deal with enemies, being able to bolster their Class Abilities.
  • Medical Troopers, while similar to Support Troopers, excel in supportive tactics, to keep their allies alive and healthy during combat, providing buffs and protection.

Cooperative

Nakamura Interactive developed Rose Squad: Extinction's Cooperative mode. The Cooperative is entirely focused on PvE and cooperative play with other players. Cooperative offers Assault Missions, which are missions structured similar to Campaign missions, and Swarm, which is a wave-based survival mode. These two modes can be played in a Private Match and allows for the host to adjust gameplay settings, such as changing difficulties, modifiers, enemies, Special Waves and Boss Waves.

Canonically, the Cooperative takes place during the Second Korman Conflict. Players assume the roles of Rose Regiment, a unit of the Eclipse Army Ranger Regiment that is under the command of TITAN Senior Commander Riley Rose and the members of Rose Squad.

The game will feature three types of post-launch downloadable content. Expansions, large paid DLC introducing a significant amount of content for all areas of the game. Content Updates, smaller free DLC for all players that introduces content for Multiplayer, Cooperative and The Armoury. The third are Events, which have two types, Seasonal and Promotional; the former are limited-time events that feature exclusive rewards and event-exclusive game modes, usually coinciding with holidays, and the latter are also limited-time crossover events featuring promotional material with other franchises, integrating its lore to fit the Eclipse Universe.

Trivia

  • The development of the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro versions of the game were cancelled in the middle of development due to hardware limitations and refusal to restrict current-gen features on previous-gen consoles.
