The Dawn of War series is a third-person fantasy video game series created by Morningwood Studios. The series debuted with Dawn of War, which focused on a war between the nations of Remnant. It was followed by Dawn of War II, contiuning the story from the first game and features a post-war period of strife and poverty. The third game Dawn of War III: Revenge focused on a father who lost his family in the previous game and is intent on finding their murderer and seek justice, and was the last game to be developed by Morningwood Studios. These three games were called the "Dawn of Revenge Trilogy" among fans.
In late 2007, Morningwood Arts announced that Morningwood London were set to work on and develop the series and that a fourth game was in development. In 2008, Morningwood London produced and released Dawn of War IV: Redemption, which focuses on a disgraced General from Dawn of War who seeks to redeem himself. In 2010, the fifth game Dawn of War V was released and focused on the same General from the previous game who now leads the Remnant Federation's armies. In spring 2011, the game's only expansion Sins of the Past was released, focusing on The General's past. In 2012, the sixth game Dawn of War VI: Retribution was released, focusing on a recently-released prisoner of war who seeks to reclaim his glory as a war general of the Dark Empire. In 2014, the seventh game Dawn of War: Retribution II was released, continuing the story of the Dark Empire war general who successfully reformed a military unit based on the Dark Empire. Following the release of Retribution II, the franchise became dormant for five years until 2019 when Morningwood London announced Dawn of War VII: The Dark Lord, which is set ten years after Retribution II and focuses on the conflict against the reborn Dark Lord Kar'ka with the father from Dawn of War III as the protagonist who is now a renowned general in the Federation's army.
